More Than Food: How the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona Strengthens Our Neighbors
A Shine Forward Southern Arizona Nonprofit Spotlight
Hunger often hides in plain sight. It may be an older adult on a fixed income navigating rising grocery costs, a parent struggling to stretch their budget after covering rent and utilities, or a neighbor facing an unforeseen illness or job loss. Sometimes, the person struggling is someone we know. For 50 years, the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona has served our neighbors by addressing both immediate hunger and its systemic roots. We are proud to feature their vital mission as part of our Shine Forward Southern Arizona initiative.
Right Here in Our Communities
When we hear “Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona,” it's easy to imagine one large organization somewhere in Tucson.
Its reach is much closer to home. The Community Food Bank operates resource centers in Green Valley, Amado and Nogales, in addition to its broader network across five Southern Arizona counties. Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona
The Green Valley Resource Center serves Green Valley, Sahuarita, Amado, Arivaca, Tubac, Tumacacori, Carmen and surrounding communities with food assistance and other resources. Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona
And the need may surprise you.
Approximately 60% of the neighbors served through the Green Valley Resource Center are over age 60. For seniors living on limited incomes, access to fresh produce and nutritious food can make an important difference in both health and independence. Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona
Just down the I-19 corridor, the Amado Resource Center serves mostly rural communities from Amado to Arivaca and surrounding areas. What began decades ago with three local residents distributing food from a structure described as little more than a horse stall has grown into a community resource serving approximately 1,200 to 1,500 people each month with emergency food. Farther south, the Nogales Resource Center serves more than 10,000 neighbors across Santa Cruz County each month and has developed into a broader community gathering place offering programs beyond food assistance. Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona
These aren't distant statistics.
These are our neighbors.
Because Hunger Is About More Than an Empty Pantry
One of the things that makes the Community Food Bank's work so important is that it doesn't stop at emergency food.
Across Southern Arizona, its programs include free meals, farmers' markets, community gardens, nutrition education, culinary training, support for local growers and food systems, advocacy and more. The organization partners with more than 300 organizations across five counties and over 23,000 square miles. Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona
Their mission goes beyond meeting today’s immediate needs; it is about building a foundation for healthier, more stable tomorrows. This vision manifests in diverse ways: connecting families with nutritious food, empowering individuals to grow their own produce, and helping those facing employment barriers gain professional culinary skills. It means ensuring children have reliable access to meals outside of school hours, and providing our older neighbors the security of knowing they don't have to choose between groceries and other essential needs. This is the true power of community support in action..
50 Years of Neighbors Helping Neighbors
This year, the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona celebrates 50 years of dedicated service to our region.
What began in 1976 with a single employee, one volunteer, and a donated delivery truck has evolved into a vital regional network. Last year alone, the organization distributed more than half a million emergency food boxes and 38 million pounds of food across five counties.
While these staggering numbers are difficult to fully comprehend, the true measure of their impact is best understood one person at a time:
One senior.
One child.
One family.
One neighbor who needed a helping hand and found a community ready to provide it.
