A Home for Every Pet: How The Animal League of Green Valley Is Caring for Animals and People in Our Community

There are some organizations in our community almost everyone has heard of. But sometimes, even when we recognize the name, we don't realize just how much happens behind the scenes.

The Animal League of Green Valley, better known as TALGV, is one of those organizations. Its vision is beautifully simple: A Home for Every Pet.

For the cats and dogs who come through TALGV's doors, that means a safe place to land, compassionate care, medical attention, training, socialization and, whenever possible, a new family to call their own.

For the people who love them, it can mean something just as important: knowing an animal they care deeply about will be cared for when circumstances change.

And for our larger community, TALGV is an example of what can happen when hundreds of people decide to show up and help.

More Than an Animal Shelter

The Animal League of Green Valley is a private, nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter serving Green Valley and surrounding communities.

The organization cares for homeless, abandoned, lost and unwanted cats and dogs while working to place them in loving homes. Animals receive medical examinations and necessary vaccinations, and TALGV pets are spayed or neutered and microchipped. Dogs are walked and participate in play groups, while both cats and dogs receive regular interaction and socialization from volunteers.

The numbers tell part of the story.

From 2009 through 2025, TALGV found homes for more than 14,248 pets. In 2025 alone, 945 animals were adopted, including 594 cats and 351 dogs.

But every one of those numbers represents something much more personal.

One of the things that makes TALGV particularly meaningful in our community is the way its mission intersects with the lives of the people who live here.

TALGV provides shelter for cats and dogs whose owners can no longer care for them, with particular attention to seniors in the Green Valley area. Illness and other major life changes can sometimes leave someone facing an incredibly difficult decision about a beloved companion.

For someone who has shared years with an animal, knowing there is a local organization willing to help can matter enormously.

TALGV also reaches beyond the animals living inside its shelter.

Its community outreach has included pet education, programs with local schools, companion-animal visits to assisted living facilities, low-cost spay and neuter programs, and assistance with pet food and veterinary care for families who need a little help caring for the animals they already love.

That's an important part of the story.

Sometimes the best way to keep an animal out of a shelter is to help a family keep that animal at home.

A Community of Volunteers Makes It Possibl

Spend any time learning about TALGV and another part of the story quickly becomes clear: People power this organization.

More than 400 volunteers contribute their time to caring for animals and helping the organization operate. In 2025, volunteers contributed more than 133,000 hours, the equivalent of approximately 69 full-time staff members.

The Attic Thrift Store is operated to help raise funds for TALGV. Donations and purchases made by members of the community help generate income that supports the organization's work.

That means a donated household item, a Saturday treasure hunt or an unexpected thrift-store find can become part of something much bigger.

Community support also comes through donations, memberships, fostering, volunteering, adopting, donating animal food and supplies, and planned giving. TALGV says the majority of its funding comes from members, individual donors, local businesses, foundations and bequests rather than federal or state funding.
